Abstract
Farmers' practices can be explained not only by expected profit and constraints, but also by motivations and personal preferences. This paper proposes an original method of modeling the decision of the farmer that allows the different types of motivations\textemdasheconomic and non-economic\textemdashto be taken into account. It is based on multi-objective programming. The authors use simulations that reproduce the technical choices of five winegrowers belonging to the same cooperative in the south of France and show that they can reveal the relative weights of these motivations for each of them, and that these weights are close to those obtained in a declarative survey. This work illustrates how mathematical programming models can be enriched to better reflect the diversity of farmers' motivations.
