Neutralité carbone : que retenir du nouveau rapport de l’AIE ?

Abstract

Alors que les États sont de plus en plus nombreux à annoncer leurs objectifs de neutralité carbone, l'Agence internationale de l'énergie (AIE) vient de dévoiler les trajectoires qui permettraient d'atteindre, ou non, cet objectif au niveau mondial, d'ici 2050. Quels sont les principaux enseignements de ces nouvelles prévisions réalisées à la demande de la présidence de la COP26, qui se tiendra en novembre 2021 à Glasgow ? La « neutralité carbone », pour réduire et absorber les émissions de GES La lutte contre le réchauffement climatique repose sur la réduction des émissions de gaz à effet de serre GES (CO2 en tête) via une baisse massive de la consommation des énergies carbonées (charbon, pétrole et gaz) ; elle repose aussi sur le développement des puits de carbone, avec l'augmentation des capacités de stockage des forêts et des sols, ainsi que sur le déploiement de technologies de captage et stockage du CO2. La combinaison de ces deux actions doit permettre d'atteindre le « zéro émission nette » (la neutralité carbone), en ramenant les émissions de GES engendrées par l'activité humaine au niveau auquel elles sont « retirées » de l'atmosphère et absorbées par les puits.
