Los Programas de Desayunos Escolares: su impacto en el rendimiento académico

Abstract

En los últimos años el Estado, a través del Programa Nacional de Asistencia Alimentaria (Pronaa) y el Fondo de Compensación y Desarrollo Social (Foncodes), ha proporcionado a escala nacional desayunos escolares a estudiantes de centros educativos de nivel inicial y de primaria. En 1999 fueron atendidos cerca de tres millones de estudiantes(1). El objetivo general de estos programas es combatir la desnutrición y de esa manera ayudar a mejorar el rendimiento escolar. En el presente artículo se discute el impacto de los programas de desayunos escolares en países en vías de desarrollo. Luego, se describe una evaluación de impacto de un programa de desayunos escolares desarrollada por investigadores de GRADE en el Perú, para finalmente llegar a algunas conclusiones y recomendaciones respecto de la implementación de estos programas.
