San Andrés y Providencia en el siglo XXI y la pandemia del COVID-19

Abstract

Este documento presenta una caracterización de la economía y las condiciones de vida en el archipiélago de San Andrés, Providencia y Santa Catalina a lo largo del siglo XXI y durante la pandemia del COVID-19. Los principales resultados senalan avances económicos importantes en las últimas décadas, al igual que grandes desafíos en materia de competitividad turística y calidad de vida de la población. En particular, se destaca la importancia de aumentar la cobertura de servicios públicos básicos, mejorar la calidad del empleo en el sector turístico y reducir los altos índices de criminalidad que enfrenta el territorio. Todos estos retos han cobrado mayor importancia con la llegada de la pandemia, la cual condujo a un profundo desplome de la actividad turística, con repercusiones directas en el mercado laboral y los tejidos empresariales. Estas tendencias recientes senalan la importancia de coordinar una respuesta de política pública entre gobiernos nacional y locales, y el sector privado para minimizar las consecuencias económicas y sociales generadas por este choque inesperado. **** ABSTRACT: This document presents an overview of the economy and living conditions in the islands of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina in the 21st century and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The main results reveal significant economic progress during the last decades, as well as big challenges in tourism competitiveness and the life quality of the population. In particular, the findings highlight the importance of increasing the provision of public services, improving the quality of jobs in the tourism sector and reducing the territory’s high crime levels. These needs have increased with the arrival of the pandemic, which has led to a profound decline of tourism activities with direct effects on the labor market and the business networks. These recent trends highlight the importance of a coordinated public response between the national and regional governments, and the private sector to minimize the economic and social consequences of this unexpected shock.
