Summary of Procedure to Match NUMIDENT Place of Birth County to GNIS Places

Abstract

This document describes the algorithm used to match the listed place of birth from the NUMIDENT file to a physical location (in particular, a county) in the United States. In short, the algorithm links the Social Security Administration (SSA) NUMIDENT file, which contains self-reported information on individuals’ birthplace, to administrative data on the universe of recognized places in the U.S.
