The 2019 Long-Term Budget Outlook

Author

  • Congressional Budget Office

Abstract

If current laws generally remained unchanged, CBO projects, large budget deficits over the next 30 years would drive federal debt held by the public to unprecedented levels—from 78 percent of gross domestic product in 2019 to 144 percent by 2049. That level of debt would be the highest in the nation’s history by far, and it would be on track to increase even more.
