Abstract

The ambitious decarbonization goals agreed upon at European level require an increasing penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) into the national energy mix. In the electricity sector, Italy aims to achieve over 63 per cent coverage of consumption through RES production by 2030. The recent acceleration in the installation of renewable energy plants is still insufficient to meet the established targets. In the future, the increase in RES and the potentially greater concentration of large-scale plants in southern Italy could exacerbate transmission congestion issues, necessitating additional infrastructure investments beyond what was previously planned.
