Abstract

The principal objective of the study is to determine on typical farms practical means and methods of overall farm improvement whereby land, fences, buildings, power, machinery, labor, capital, crops, livestock., and marketing, each, are properly developed for the best use and are brought into balance for the efficient operation of the farm as a whole. The data so obtained may be used in the development of principles and practices for general improvement of various types of farms in this region. Secondary objectives include a, study of the factors causing farm improvement to lag behind industrial improvement, and the obstacles that retard the improvement of farms. Twenty-five farms were selected throughout Virginia to represent a wide range of such variable factors as topography, soil, climate, rainfall, crops, livestock, markets, size of farm, and type of farming.
