Abstract

This publication presents an updated inventory by the Soil Conservation Service of land disturbed by surface mining in the United States as of July 1, 1977. This is the fourth national inventory. The first was made in 1964 (USDI, 1967) and updated in 1971 (USDA, 1973) and 1974 (Congressional Record, April 8, 1974). This newest survey was completed for each county in the United States (regions were used for Alaska and municipalities for the Caribbean area under United States jurisdiction). The inventory lists the amount of land needing reclamation, land not requiring reclamation, and total land disturbed. The land needing reclamation includes both reclamation required by law and reclamation not required by any law. Each of these two types of land needing reclamation were subdivided to show the kinds of commodities removed (coal, sand and gravel, and all other mined materials). Land disturbed by surface mining includes all mining of subsurface resources by (1) removing the overburden lying above the natural deposit; (2) mining directly from the natural deposits exposed; and (3) underground mining that has significant effects on the surface.
