Abstract

Excerpts from the Foreword: For some time, county and community corn-hog committeemen have been requesting an all-round handbook on corn-hog-production control under the Agricultural Adjustment Act. Cooperating producers continually raise questions which require ready reference to facts, figures, and statements of policy. This booklet has been prepared in response to these requests. So far as possible, most of the questions raised by producers have been answered by direct statement in the text. The Agricultural Adjustment Administration hopes this handbook will be distinctly helpful to the many corn-hog workers throughout the United States. Since it is designed to present a complete picture of adjustment activities and problems in the corn-hog industry, corn-hog workers will find it useful in carrying on discussion at neighborhood meetings as well as in answering questions. The first chapter, The 1935 Corn-Hog Adjustment Program, will be of value in connection with the sign-up of the 1935 corn-hog contracts. The second chapter reviews the emergency hog-buying and other corn-hog adjustment operations to date, and their results. The third chapter contains a comprehensive analysis and explanation of the processing taxes. The closing section of this chapter, in particular, should be carefully studied. In accordance with suggestions by committeemen, the fourth and final chapter deals with the fundamental factors which gave rise to agricultural adjustment in the first place. This chapter also discusses briefly the outlook for the future.
