Abstract

Excerpts from the report: The Coastal Region includes all the coastal watersheds and offshore islands from the Parker River in the north to the Buzzards Bay and Narragansett Bay drainage in the southeast portion of Massachusetts. It is bounded by the Merrimack River and the Blackstone River Basins on the north and west, and by the Atlantic Ocean on the east and south. Larger rivers in the region include the Ipswich, Neponset, Taunton, and the Ten Mile. The region includes the entire counties of Dukes, Bristol, Plymouth, Barnstable, Suffolk, and Nantucket, and parts of Essex, Middlesex, and Norfolk Counties. The region is the cultural and economic center for not only Massachusetts but for the entire New England area. The region is composed of 127 towns or cities and 10 study areas which are defined on either a watershed or on a natural boundary basis. This is a report of a study of the water and related land resources of the Coastal Region, prepared by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Massachusetts Water Resources Commission. The objectives of this study are to identify problems, determine needs through 1990, and suggest alternatives which can be used by the Massachusetts Water Resources Commission to prepare a comprehensive state water and related land resources plan. Information contained in this report will be useful to state, regional, and local agencies concerned with land use and natural resource planning.
