Abstract

This chapter reviews media coverage of the Norwegian National Authority for Investigation and Prosecution of Economic and Environmental Crime (Økokrim). The review was based on an empirical study of seven agency press releases and 305 news reports in the same time period in Norway. The media seem to trust Økokrim as they served mediation of messages from the policing unit without any kind of editorial processes, and they refer to Økokrim when crime cases are reported without questioning the role or the performance of the agency. Rather, the media communicate warnings against various fraud schemes where the media treat the agency as a very reliable source of warnings. Overall, a very good impression of the national serious fraud office is created by agency press releases and news reports. This outcome is in sharp contrast to research results previously presented, where lack of competence in the rivalry with defense lawyers allegedly is one of the agency’s shortcomings…
