Abstract

This chapter argues against the conventional distinction between gamification and game-based learning, advocating for a continuum approach that integrates game mechanics to enhance user engagement and learning outcomes. Highlighting academic and practical confusion caused by overlapping definitions, the chapter critiques the tendency to categorize these concepts rigidly. It examines how technology vendors and client expectations drive this artificial separation, often for commercial gain.By proposing a continuum model that ranges from minimal gamification to immersive game-based experiences, this chapter underscores the benefits of viewing these methods as part of a unified spectrum. This approach rationalizes game element use, avoids overengineering, and fosters innovative, hybrid solutions. The chapter leverages theoretical insights to demonstrate how blending gamification principles with game-based learning can maximize cognitive gains and motivation. It calls for a flexible, data-driven methodology that transcends rigid classifications, ultimately envisioning a future where educational technologies seamlessly integrate gamification and game-based experiences to create dynamic, personalized learning environments.
