Abstract

This chapter examines the structural transformation of the Korean information economy in 1990, 1995, and 2000 using Porat's research framework (1977) as the foundation. This chapter consists of two parts: the first part shows how much growth has been experienced by different industries and sectors over the years in terms of GDP. The study found that the shares of information and service sectors in total GDP grew from 51.92% and 55.54% in 1990 to 59.03% and 66.20% in 2000, respectively. These results imply that structural changes may accompany newly emerging business models in service and information economies. To capture this transition in practice, in the second part, this chapter puts forth case studies of two traditional industries — apparel and metallic pattern industries. The case studies strongly support the results shown in the first part.
