Abstract

This work deals with environmental contingent valuation in polluted areas, where people and stakeholders do not consider environmental quality as a tradable good. A methodology has been developed under the form of an algorithmic procedure, including 12 activity stages and 4 decision nodes, for the estimation of willingness to pay/accept (WTP/WTA) by surveying affected individuals so that conclusions can be reached as regards the attitude of total population. A case study is presented concerning contingent valuation in an area polluted by an olive pomace oil mill. The extremely great disparity (to an extent that has not been reported in economic literature so far) found between WTA and WTP values is attributed to the different logical basis taken into consideration, when each of these two measures is assessed, as it was found by a post-survey discussion with the participants.
