E-governance

Abstract

This chapter explores the evolution and impact of e-governance, leveraging information and communication technology (ICT) to enhance government services and interactions across various sectors. E-governance spans government-to-citizen (G2C), government-to-business (G2B), government-to-government (G2G), and government-to-employees (G2E) interactions, aiming to improve efficiency, transparency, and accountability in governance processes. Key initiatives include online tax filing, voter registration, business licensing, and digital identity systems, fostering citizen participation and accessibility. Despite benefits such as streamlined service delivery and enhanced transparency, e-governance faces challenges, including the digital divide, cybersecurity risks, and interoperability issues. Case studies from India’s Digital India Mission, the European Union’s Digital Europe Program, and initiatives in the United States and the Caribbean highlight regional approaches and challenges in implementing e-governance. Overall, while e-governance offers transformative governance and citizen engagement opportunities, addressing these challenges is crucial to realizing its full global potential.
