Political Party Affiliation and Managerial Promotions

Abstract

Using national longitudinal data from the China Family Panel StudiesChina Family Panel Studies (CFPS) from 2010 to 2021, this study investigates the association between membership in the Communist Party of China (CPCCommunist Party of China (CPC)) and managerial promotionsManagerial promotion in ChinaChina. The study employs the random-effectsRandom-Effects (RE) model with lagged variablesLagged variable and applies the propensity score matchingPropensity Score Matching (PSM) method to address endogeneityEndogeneity problems. The results suggest that the probability of managerial promotionsManagerial promotion among CPCCommunist Party of China (CPC) members is higher than that of non-CPCCommunist Party of China (CPC) members. Furthermore, CPC membership’sCPC membership positive effect on managerial promotionsManagerial promotion in the public sectorPublic sector is greater than that in the private sectorPrivate sector. These conclusions are reaffirmed through several robustness and sensitivity checksSensitivity check. The results indicate that the managerial promotionManagerial promotion in ChinaChina is significantly affected by the grassroots CPCCommunist Party of China (CPC) organizations in workplaces.
