Abstract

Case study research requires the development of a theoretical foundation, independent of whether the case study’s purpose is to build or to test theory. This chapter addresses such requirement. Firstly, the concept of BMI in multi-business firms is defined (2.1). Along with the working definition, a set of measures and indicators is brought forward in the form of a BMI-identification tool that allows the concept’s operationalization. The term “operationalization” can be understood as the process of deciding how to translate abstract concepts such as BMI in multi-business firms into something more concrete and directly observable. It constitutes an important prerequisite for the selection of cases worth being studied in order to answer the research question. Secondly, a recommendation is made to place the concept of BMI in multi-business firms, as defined in section 2.1, into the arena of Corporate Entrepreneurship (2.2). Ultimately, this leads to the suggestion that the dissertation’s findings complement this broad and well-established research field. Thirdly, by working through the existing literature on BMI, activities or behaviors are identified that possibly turn out to be relevant for business unit managers to perform BMI (2.3).
