Resilience and Family Business Groups in Unstable Economies

Abstract

This chapter focuses on resilience and family business groups in unstable environments. Based on Malfense Fierro (2012) model, we present four case studies from Africa, Middle East and Latin America to showcase the diverse strategic responses of family businesses to cope with such environment. These responses nurture resilience and shape strategies that impinge wealth retention and growth. Resilience is developed from diverse factors, being the family factor highly relevant. We observe a recursive interaction between the context and the response family businesses adopt through the development of family business groups. A theoretical extension of the model proposes that resilience can be explored through the way family business groups compete—their strategic position, risk management, internationalization and management of human, social and financial capital used.
