Strange Encounter: An Inquiry into the Popularity of Participation in Organizations

Abstract

Doubtless, participation is one of the silver bullets of modernity. Iridescent, pervasive and almost irrejectable, it represents the basic desire of modern individuals to be included into societal communication. However, especially in its organizational form, the modern occurrence of participation comes along with a story of sublime complexity, if not of failure. Both, management as much as workers appear to be reasonably frustrated about the outcomes of participative efforts, compared to the high hopes both parties once had expressed. This text investigates both, the traits of the societal popularity of participation and the complexities of its implementation in organizational contexts.
