Abstract

Higher education institutions in Cameroon have undergone a significant transformation in terms of population size, teaching and administration. Between 2010 and 2023, the State has created five more state universities, in addition to six existing ones, to meet the demands for education. This transformation, which you have been a part of, has had implications for the supply of human resources (both teaching and administrative staff). This could potentially challenge the effective management of human resources, which could impact the quality of education, usually envisaged in students’ performance. While other factors can affect the quality of higher education, managing human resources, especially teachers, is crucial for quality assurance. Ensuring that human resources have the required skills to do what is expected of them is vital to sustaining organizational productivity. This calls for a need for automation in managing human resources. From this backdrop, this chapter explores how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be used in human resource management (HRM) in higher education institutions for quality assurance. It provides an overview of HRM in higher education, AI and HRM, and ethical considerations in using AI in HRM. Specifically, it will delve into how AI can streamline HR processes, such as automating recruitment and onboarding, enhancing decision-making and ultimately improving the quality of education.
