What Type of Persons Should You Take on the Journey?

Abstract

Having established that flat structures can work, this chapter asks which type of person can make them really thrive, and in which type of flat organization. In a manager-friendly way, it reports what is known from science about which type of staff are particularly susceptible to being granted autonomy, when, and why. The chapter also raises the question of which individuals act responsibly with such autonomy, and why. In addition to the earlier mentioned studies, Chap. 4 also invokes insights from experimental economics and the literature on social norms. As before, academic findings and case anecdotes complement each other. The chapter ends with a nuanced list of characteristics that employees should ideally bring to the table to work effectively and efficiently in different types of decentralized organizations. In doing so, the chapter provides management with a guide to optimal hiring for staffing flat structures.
