The Impact of Pain on Work and Professional Careers

Abstract

Pain is the second highest reason given for absence from work, with the greatest proportion of persistent pain conditions accounted for by musculoskeletal conditions. The chapter begins by explaining how chronic widespread pain (CWP) and Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FM) affect individuals, how pain is measured and how it is treated. FM was chosen as it is frequently reported to be characterized by women from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, exhibiting behavioural problems. There appears to be no research that has looked at an educated, skilled population from higher socioeconomic backgrounds, consequently we present two case studies to highlight the differences in the experiences of two professional women (one managerial and one business owner) suffering from FM, relating those experiences to the understanding, measurement and treatment of FM, and the impact that their experiences has had on their ability to work, plus consideration of how clinicians and organizations can assist professional employees of CWP and FM.
