Virtual Worlds for Energy: A Topical Review

Abstract

In this chapter we review how virtual worlds can be used to educate for a particular topic—the topic of energy. Energy is a key concern for the twenty-first century. Fossil fuels are dwindling and society needs to reconsider their energy “footprint”, which requires that: (a) people have better energy management skills, and (b) they educate themselves about sustainable and renewable energy alternatives. However, people lack the opportunity to experience their energy management skills under scarce conditions, and many of the energy alternatives—like solar and wind—are still too expensive for the average consumer. Finally, some promising alternatives like energy harvesters are still in research and development. 3D3C Virtual Worlds provide people with a rich, immersive, and plausible environment in which to test their energy management skills and to experiment with alternative energy.
