Abstract

Ecosystem services management is a crucial topic for human societies. One of the economic tools developed for better management are Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES), which aim to connect people who provide ecosystem services to the people who benefit from them. These schemes can be useful, particularly, for protected areas, such as Natura 2000 Network sites. The present work proposed the first steps of a methodological approach for developing a place-based PES scheme, an innovative approach that allows to better include local characteristics into the scheme for improving the possibilities of success. Although the theoretical framework is almost clear, applications are still few. Further steps will be improved in the near future for the full development of the PES schemes.
