Measuring Short Food Supply Chain Resilience in Campania Region During COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the fragility of food systems, particularly in relation to global trade, while also highlighting the resilience of Short Food Supply Chains (SFSCs). Citizen-consumers continued to purchase through these channels to limit the spread of the virus, and farms implemented innovative and rapid strategic responses. In fragile contexts, such as inner areas, SFSCs can serve as a crucial competitive tool for farms to enhance their resilience. This study aims to assess the resilience of farms located in the inner areas of the Campania Region (Southern Italy) and examine the role of SFSCs during the pandemic. A questionnaire was administered to a sample of wineries in these areas to determine their resilience score, which was measured using three variables identified in the literature: effectiveness, flexibility, and responsiveness. A linear regression analysis was conducted to identify the factors influencing farm resilience. The results indicate that both farm and farmer characteristics, such as turnover, use of SFSCs, age, and education, significantly affect resilience scores. These findings may assist in decision-making processes for the development of inner areas and in designing targeted policies to manage unexpected events in various scenarios.
