Abstract

The study sought to investigate the rationale of integrated planning and sustainable development strategies in developing local government regional units. Data was collected from a sample of 120 local leaders from Kozani city in Greece using questionnaires. The study showed a significant relationship between the effectiveness of sustainable development strategies and the sustainable development of the local government regional unit. Also, leaders’ competence in development has a significant impact on the development of local government regional units. The study also confirmed that the general effectiveness of sustainable development strategies greatly influences the sustainable development of local government regional units. Sustainable development strategies must be mainstreamed in line with the stages of the national planning cycle to achieve the desired development objectives of the local unit or country as a whole. The study also revealed that proper planning eliminates misappropriation of funds leading to economic growth. All of these have a significant impact on the development of local government regional units.
