Abstract

Process improvement under Lean paradigm is a relatively simple task; however, maintaining this improved level over time and delivering a sustained result is much more difficult. Improved processes are to be stabilized and the path to sustainable growth comprises of alternate cycles of improvement followed by stabilization. Kaizen or continual improvement is all about setting and constantly updating standards. Here we focus on different types of standards used in a Lean context. Visual display of Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) (what to do) coupled with clear Work Instructions (how to do) is a powerful way of ensuring process adherence at the ground-level. Human beings take in over 80% of information through their eyes and hence visual standards are essential for ease of compliance. We discuss the use of Autonomous and Planned Maintenance as equipment standards, Visual Work Instructions for manual process standard and finally, the use of 5S as a tool for building a culture of continual improvement.
