Abstract

Most platforms operate in contexts which are typically winner-takes-all. The primary conditions of WTA markets include the presence of strong network effects, high multi-homing costs, and the lack of special preferences for any side of users. Given these conditions, it is imperative to evaluate why certain markets would remain WTA and would be dominated by one or at most a few platforms, with very little competition. This chapter elaborates on the strategies of platforms that operate in winner-takes-all markets.
