Reshuffling the World

Abstract

China is becoming the largest economy of the world again, like it used to be the Giant Dragon, before it turned out to be an ancient dinosaur with little innovation strength when the East met the West. Foremost the USA and to a less extent the EU still have their competitive advantage in the field of innovation. But for how long? While the West is busy putting out the fire of crises, they may also be putting out their innovation strength. At the same time, the Chinese government is rolling out innovation policies supported by wide-open money taps and favorable social, business, and legal conditions for innovation. The Chinese enterprises are outgrowing their image of the factory of the world and becoming world players in, for example, renewable energy, telecommunication, high-speed trains, and air- and spacecrafts. The aim of China to be an innovative country by 2020 is not yet taken seriously by the West. In Western eyes, the world still turns on Western norms and values and according to Western principles for international relations and market rules. The Chinese may turn it into a different world. Learning and combining the good market principles from the West with their own heritage and culture, the Chinese may become a giant in innovation using their high-speed top-down and collective long-turn innovation strategy. They may change the game of innovation, but success is not guaranteed. The Chinese aim of being the future nation of innovation is a huge challenge far more difficult than the achievements of the past decades. The Chinese culture was never really pro-innovation until 30 years ago. The Chinese economy is too far integrated into the world economy for the Chinese to develop without the others. There is still a long way for the Chinese to go to turn into an innovative society. The West still has time to use their innovation strength to have a bright future together with China. In our opinion, the field of innovation will be the most important battlefield between China, the USA, and the EU. If the USA and the EU can ride the Chinese innovation wave, there will be an infinitive welfare for us all. The world is now reshuffled and strategic innovation is the necessary answer to deal with it.
