OTT Partnering with Telcos: On the Rise

Abstract

Cooperation with over-the-top players (OTTs) [The term OTT refers to Over the top refers to film and television content provided via a high-speed Internet connection rather than a cable or satellite provider. OTT does not mean free, as the term encompasses services such as Netflix, Amazon, iTunes and HBO Now (see Investopedia, Over the top 2017).] is rapidly becoming a well-established element for telecommunications companies (telcos). Partnerships in the entertainment sector such as those with Spotify, Deezer, and Netflix display especially high dynamics. Sales and innovation partnership agreements are being concluded. Yet under what conditions is cooperation of this type really rewarding for telco companies? Are size advantages a significant factor for the success of such cooperative ventures? The article identifies a taxonomy of OTT types and spotlights appropriate principles for cooperation management targeted to these OTT clusters. In addition a hype area of startups in the banking and financial sector is highlighted, which might be feasible as value added innovation partners for Telcos: collaboration with Fintech companies.
