Abstract

The main thrust of the logistic principles, activities, and theories discussed in Chaps. 1 through 6 was directed towards military campaigns and major operations, also called “regular warfare.” This thrust was reflected in the various examples presented therein. However, most of the military conflicts since the beginning of the twenty-first century have been in the form of insurgencies, which have triggered counterinsurgency (COIN) operations. These “irregular” armed conflicts bear certain tactical and operational characteristics, which are different from those of regular warfare. These distinct characteristics affect the structure and implementation of logistics on both sides of the conflict – the insurgents and the regime forces who confront them. In this chapter we highlight and discuss the unique logistic aspects of insurgency and COIN operations.
