Abstract

Diagnosing and designing the enterprise starts at its “place of truth”: out in the real world, with customers, and on that level where its purpose is actually fulfilled. The process takes us through seven steps that build one upon the other. These can yet need not all be worked through. The model may also be used only to answer individual questions about organizational control or communication. This chapter briefly considers each of the diagnostic steps and explains what is done and what the outcome is. The subsequent chapters explain the seven steps in depth and illustrate them with examples. Each chapter concludes by inviting readers to diagnose their own “System in Focus”—and to swallow the medicine.
