Abstract

Diagnosing enterprises with the Viable System Model (VSM) always involves the same five control elements and the lines of communication between these elements. First come the three basic elements—environment, operation, and management—which together form an operational unit. Several operational units make up the first of the five control elements. This is the operational business, which fulfills the purpose of the whole. Everything else is needed only to ensure that the operational business can function in the long term (viability). Using four very different examples, this chapter examines the five control elements. The third dimension of organizing requires a slightly different perspective on what is commonly understood as organizing as we are dealing with controlling the whole, as well as with internal and external communication. This chapter lays the foundation for working with the VSM in the next chapter.
