Abstract

We live in a world of organizations. Everything that happens in a modern society happens through better or worse functioning organizations. For a long time, the weaknesses of organizations could be offset by a little more management effort. Today, on the other hand, we can no longer afford to be stalled by bad organizations. Why does hardly anyone seem to be satisfied with their organization? Why is there no unifying theory of organization? And why are practitioners so uncertain about what distinguishes a right organization from a wrong one? This chapter shows that organizations can only be compared by measuring complexity and that complexity is the core problem of management. We can learn how to deal with complexity by studying organisms. These replace the old-world image of the organization as a machine and show us how to correctly design the third dimension of organizing: the neurology of the firm.
