Food Waste in Romania from an Individual and a National Perspective

Abstract

Food waste is an important problem that should be carefully addressed in order to contribute to the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDG) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, mainly the 2nd—Zero Hunger and the 12th—Responsible Consumption and Production. The main objectives of the paper are: establishing the food waste context in Romania comparing to other European countries, identifying the main causes of food waste and the measures that could be implemented to reduce the waste and promote a more responsible consumption. The methodology consists in conducting a triple analysis, one focused on individuals, another on nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), public authorities, and private sector, and the third on the initiatives of the most important retailers in Romania in terms of turnover and net profit. The results offer a clearer image on the food waste in Romania presenting many perspectives in order to better understand the phenomenon and find solutions to reduce food waste.
