Abstract

As is evident from previous chapters, the 4th IR is changing the terrain of the workplace, including how both repetitive and non-repetitive tasks are being done, services are being provided, decisions are being made, and the relationship between humans and technology as work is being done. These changes have given raise to the popular question “What is the future of work?” Underlying this question are questions regarding the essential components of the relationship between humans and intelligent technologies. However, a number of factors are contributing to how the future of work will evolve. These include how remote learning necessitated by the Covid pandemic has changed how employees and employers have developed new preferences regarding how work is managed, the changing mix of generations composing the workforce and their expectations, globalization of industries, the acerating pace of innovation and change, and pressures regarding environmental sustainability.
