Abstract

Data ethics is probably one of the areas in big data with most compelling questions still unanswered. With technology advancing at a rapid paste the danger is for data ethics to be lagging. We live more and more in a world where it is hard to distinguish the real from the fake, and the facts from the fiction. From deep learning to deep fake, from virtual reality to fake reality it is almost possible to create any reality and any news. Questions of data privacy, who really owns the data, of profiling, what is permissible and under what conditions, are but of the few questions that remain to be fully answered. Without the proper rules, guidelines, education, training, and tools in place—and quickly—we risk making ourselves obsolete.
