Abstract

From observations across industries, it can be concluded that dynamics related to disruptive innovations occur at an ever-increasing pace and impact. Simultaneously, scholarly debates highlight the role of the firm’s business model in understanding these dynamics. Whereas scholars from the disruptive innovation domain recently underlined the complexity inherent to disruptive innovation, scholars from the business model domain highlight the underlying similarities of business models across different firms and industries. A combination of these two streams of debates appears to be fruitful to further explore similarities of business model disruptions. Consequently, this paper explores eight exemplary cases of business model disruption across German industries. Based on in-depth interviews and systematically accessed secondary data, findings suggest that there are indeed similar, yet distinctive approaches to perform disruptive innovation. Three approaches of business model disruption are presented: “connecting,” “reducing,” and “flexibilizing.” Thereby, this paper provides practitioners with an abstraction of different approaches for inducing disruptive dynamics.
