Abstract

This chapter provides an introduction to the central theoretical ideas developed at WIFU over recent years. We start by presenting and critically examining a classic model that has provided the basis for much research into family businesses, the three circle model. We then go on to develop this model in this chapter and, in Chap. 4 , to establish the notion of the “duplicated family”, an understanding of family, business and ownership, based on system theory and communication theory that do not regard these three elements as circles but as contexts, each with its own specific communication logic. This then leads us to the concept of the paradox which we believe is very helpful when it comes to understanding processes within the family and, to some extent, also the business. Finally, this chapter introduces the concept of paradox-friendliness, in which a form of family strategy is promoted that is not bound by rigid rules but, instead, seeks to strike a balance between inevitable contradictions.
