Knowledge Flows in KIBS Companies: Theoretical Framework and Study Description

Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to present the theoretical framework and study description for the examination on issues related to knowledge management and knowledge flows in knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS) companies. Due to the early development of theories on these issues, as well as their complexity and dependence on the research context, the case study methodology was applied. The chapter consists of two parts: the first one presents the theoretical framework, referring to the previously discussed theory of knowledge management and knowledge flows, and the second one presents the methodological foundations of the research and its description. In the first part, the theoretical aspects of knowledge, knowledge management and knowledge flows are considered from the perspective of the KIBS companies. As knowledge is an especially valuable resource for these companies, they need to handle it with care and attention. The classification of knowledge flows for the KIBS companies is presented, together with characteristics. Special attention is also given to the flows of knowledge between KIBS companies and their customers. In the second part, detailed methodological basis for the qualitative study is offered, together with the description of the study itself.
