Abstract

What we value, our deep-held beliefs, constantly and intensely inform our actions. How we rise to new life challenges, how we communicate, our relationships with others, and most important of all, what we pick out and focus on in the world around us, acutely depend on the values and beliefs we hold. Our values are nurtured within the family, through schooling, in contact with peers and community; and now in a rapidly complexifying and interconnecting world of ideas. What is practised most, the customs we cherish, the protocols we experience, the knowledge we take on board, all go to make up a system of belief. ‘Give me a child until the age of seven and I’ll give you the man’, remarked the inimitable George Bernard Shaw. When you consider the ideas that a child takes on board up towards this age, they will affect the way that the eventual adult thinks and behaves for the rest of his/her life.
