Abstract

The European clothing industry comprises over 28 000 firms, 75 per cent of which employ fewer than a hundred people. Though not directly affected by the prospect of European unification scheduled for the end of 1992, it is a sector that stands to witness a great deal of internal upheaval, in the form of restructuring, as it struggles to remain competitive in an environment that is rapidly taking on the aspect of a global market. The restructuring is already visible as many medium-sized companies have gone out of business or merged or fallen prey to absorption by large multinationals, such as in the case of Dim, recently bought by the American company, Sara Lee.
