Industrial Mobility

Abstract

The counterpart to women’s occupational classifications are their industrial classifications which have received relatively little attention in academic work even though the economic structure is most usually discussed in terms of the distribution of industries. Industries form the backbone structure of an economy, and determine to a large extent the range of occupations on offer. Women’s employment changes of the post-war era have been clearly linked to industrial changes in the British and American economies. Notably, women’s employment has increased in the growing services sector and in Britain the employment opportunities in the services sector have been largely part-time. If we are interested in the relationships between the structure of opportunities in the economy and women’s employment experiences, therefore, we should not omit some consideration of the industrial categories of women’s work.
