An Industry Outlook

Abstract

This chapter provides an industry outlook on female employment in the DFL countries. There are various reasons for producing this unusual overview. In the first place, mechanisms allocating labour basically follow industry divisions; with some exceptions, allocation along occupational lines comes second. Translated into daily life terms, most young women looking for a job orient themselves on a specific industry. Job information on the WageIndicator websites is also structured this way, with its primary orientation on industries and subsequently on occupations. Secondly, employment prospects differ widely across industries. With globalization and the development of new technologies, these differences will most likely widen further in the near future; foreign investment, international outsourcing and tourism will be the main drivers of change. A third reason for producing an industry overview is that in most countries trade unions are organized along industry lines. As cooperation with trade unions was the lifeline of the DFL project, it was important to serve those involved in the project with industry information.
