Abstract

On my study wall there is a black and white photograph of six sooty men on the buffer beam of a locomotive (see Figure 4.1). Each of them has his grease top cap (the badge of the locomotive department) raised high in his hand, and a wide grin etched on his face. The caption reads: ‘Footplatemen celebrate nationalisation at Newcastle Central station, 1st January 1948’.
