Abstract

Over one hundred and twenty years of private ownership came to an end with the nationalisation of the railways on 1 January 1948. One could be forgiven for thinking that this marked a sea change in the way the industry was operated and managed, but to what extent did fundamental change really occur? This chapter examines the problems and contradictions for management in the railway industry over three decades ending with the election of the first Thatcher administration in 1979.
