Encouraging development

Abstract

The success of peer consultation stands or falls with the quality of the consultation group as a ‘learning group’. A group of colleagues who want to help each other become more professional by means of consultation should be not only ‘working well’ but also ‘developing well’. There are a variety of influences outside and inside the group, such as organisational politics or emerging dominant personalities, which may inhibit concentration on work and development. Facilitators of consultation groups should develop their sensitivity to threatening and encouraging aspects of work and development in groups.
