Trends in and Projections of Bangladeshi Food Production and Dependence on Imported Food

Abstract

In earlier chapters, using official Bangladeshi statistics, we indicated that Bangladeshi foodgrain production grew at a substantially faster rate following the Green Revolution than prior to it. However, Boyce (1985) argues that there are a number of shortcomings in the official agricultural production statistics, and he derives an alternative data series for agricultural crops. In the light of this, we derive an alternative data series for foodgrain production based on the Boyce’s (1985) assumptions, and use it and the official data to estimate growth rates for various sub-periods since the early 1950s. However, we raise serious doubts about the qualitative superiority of the revised data series over the official data, while acknowledging Boyce’s contribution.
