Extending Working Life: The Retention of Older Workers

In: Managing an Age-Diverse Workforce

Abstract

The need to extend working lives has been explored and discussed, showing that a broad range of factors influences whether such an extension can and will occur on a broader scale than is currently the case (Vickerstaff et al. 2008). This chapter explores the various policies and measures that employers can put in place to encourage the extension of working lives. The contextual factors that employers need to consider include: (a) the institutional framework; (b) changes in the economy; and (c) changes in working lives.
